Day 16 - Friday, June 28, 2024 - Oslo and the Train ride Getting there

Views from the train window as we headed West to Oslo

The Oslo Opera House

We were up early today.  6 am breakfast and then at 7 am we were escorted to our bus for transfer to the Bergen train station.

The train left Bergen at precisely 8:08 am.  European trains run on schedule!

It was a 7 hour train ride through some beautiful countryside.  The first half of the journey was up into the mountains.  We traveled through 200 tunnels in the 7 hour ride.  Norway is definitely mountainous.

Thes are all photos taken from the moving train.  We climbed to over 3,400 ft of elevation and you can see the snow start to build in the pictures.

As we neared Oslo, the land became flatter and was more farmland.

We arrived at 3:05 precisely!  After disembarking from the train, we walked a short distance to our hotel.  Other than our carry on luggage we wanted to take with us, Viking took care of our luggage, from ship to the delivery if our luggage to our hotel rooms.

Our hotel for the next two nights.

Our stroll to the Opera House.  The building is compared to the Sidney Opera House in Australia but is quite different.  However the angles and the fact that you can walk up the side of the building is really fantastic and the views are great.

We were on our own for the remainder of today.  Wayne stayed behind and Roger, Amy and I went out to explore the city.

We headed to a group of food trucks in the Barcode section of the city but we were too late and they were gone.  But the Islo Opera House was just across the street. So we wandered over there and we're able to walk up the outside of the building to the roof.  It's all angles and steep ramps.  The views were tremendous.

After a walk back to our hotel, 9,300 steps in all today, not bad, since over 7 hours was sitting on a train we played our last round of dominos as Roger and Amy leave for the airport very early Sunday morning.   We don't leave until 10 am.

Tomorrow we have a bus tour of the city, part of the Viking excursion.  Our afternoon is free tomorrow and I'm hoping to see more of the city before Sunday's departure.
