Day 12 - Tuesday April 25, 2023 - Bari Italy

Making pasta the old fashioned way, Orecchiette

We took the "included" tour today, A Walking Tour of Bari Italy.  It was a wonderful "old" city.  Built during the 11th century and remodeled occasionally, it still has the flavor of the old Italian city I was hoping to visit.

The bus and tour guide started in the old city at the wall that represents and divides the "old" from the new city of Bari, a typical bustling city center.

Orecchiette for sale.   it's a shame that it wouldn't be fresh when I returned home

We stopped to watch some women making the pasta and hoping to sell it to us.  Unfortunately, it wouldn't be fresh when we returned home.

Didn't stop long enough to find out what these are, but they look great.

Walking through the old town was perfect (and fast).  The streets were different.  White stoned streets were for the soldiers.  Black stoned streets for the people.

We stopped at the Cathedral San Sabino with a rose window, special because it sheds a perfect shadow on June 21st at 5 pm each year on the floor inside the cathedral.

On the way to the next church.  I love taking pictures of the produce and the flowers on the wall were perfect.

The next cathedral we visited was the cathedral of Saint Nicholas (Father Christmas).

Basilica San Nicola built between 1087 and 1197.

Finally, a tasting of the orecchetti.  Well earned, he walked hard and fast all morning

the new city and the restaurant where we had the tasting

Views of the new city

I really liked today.  It would have been wonderful to stay longer on our own but Wayne was tired from chasing the guide.  She walked really fast and didn't let us take pictures (easily).  I loved the old town, the feel and the vibrations of life in this section.  The new part of town, the city center, is just like any other booming metropolis and we could have been in Scottsdale in the shopping district.

After the tasting of pasta, we took the bus back to the ship.  All in all, 7,214 steps today through the city.  Tonight, dinner will either be at The Chef's Table if Wayne will put up with a 'fru-fru" dinner or we'll enjoy ourselves at The Restaurant.

Tomorrow is a sea day.   A day of rest.  We'll be playing dominoes and cribbage and just kicking back as we sale toward Venice.   Then the pace picks up again.
