Day 9 - Saturday April 22, 2023 - Naples Italy & Pompei

Today was another incredible day.  Our ship docked in Naples at noon today and we disembarked with a bus ride to start the tour, Pompeii City of Beauty and Ruin.  Pompeii was just a half hour bus ride from the port.   I don't know what I was expecting, but Pompeii was much bigger.  You study a little of this in school but it doesn't sink in.  Pompeii was a large prosperous city that was destroyed in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried under 19 feet of ash.

The first sight of Napoli from the ship as we pulled in.

The body is a cast of a hole found when excavating.  When the hole was filled with plaster and a cast was made and exposed, it was this person buried under the ash during the eruption.

There was so much more to the city of Pompeii.  All the streets, laid out as more modern towns.  The streets are the original paving, uneven and worn and you can see the chariot tracks.

We walked all over the town of Pompeii with our guide.  Some of the places we stopped to see were the theatre where everyone sat and watched the various shows.  There was a hierarchy to the seating with the wealthy sitting closer to the stage and then the plebeians, and finally at the highest levels, the wives of the slaves who were only allowed to stand.

We visited some of the shops including what looked like a kitchen with cooking area.

We visited the whore house.  Prostitution was accepted.   The women prostitutes were slaves but it was an accepted as a way of life.  You can tell by the pictures on the wall advertising the various positions.  The phylax  symbols were symbols used for good luck or to ward off bad luck.
Original walls - you can see the snake.

Dinner tonight was all seafood!   Shrimp, mussels, sea bass, halibut, salmon.   A wonderful dinner.
8,900 steps today.  Rough, uneven steps with uneven pavers and lots of steps.   Another good workout.

Tomorrow, Messina, Sicily, Italy!
