Day 4 Friday February 16, 2024 A Day on our own in Cairns Australia

I'm writing this at 2:30 am, sleep is most likely over.  But I did get about 8 hours.

Some firsts for me. Steering wheels on the right side of the car and the taxi driving us to the hotel on the "wrong" side of the road.

And the Australian currency exchange rate is a real plus for us.  The US dollar is worth $1.54 Australian.   Our taxi ride meter showed $28.23.  Our bank charge was $18.61.

Last night Wayne and I found our last bit of energy and walked out to find an early dinner before we crashed and burned.

We walked about 10 minutes down the waterfront, which is only a block away from the hotel through a lovely park.  We went to a restaurant, Dundee's on the Waterfront.  The food, primarily seafood, was excellent.

I ordered 3 grilled oysters Mornay and a healthy serving of steamed mussels.  Delicious!

For those wondering about my diet, I didn't eat the bread.

Wayne had a sampler as well as 5 beautiful raw oysters.

We slowly walked back to our hotel and lights were out at 7 pm, maybe earlier.

A word about our hotel.  It has a small casino.  Not like Vegas.  Quiet and small it's quite pleasant.  The slot machines aren't loud and there isn't loud music blaring.

Our hotel is very nice.  We're here for three more nights.  We have today on our own to wander and tonight at dinner we meet the rest of the tour group.

Pictures of our hotel.

A digital aquarium.  No live fish, just electronic and everything moves like a real aquarium.

After breakfast here at the hotel (egg white omelette with baby rocket, roasted pepper and red onion (very good) we took a walk along the waterfront boardwalk and did some window shopping.   It's humid but in the shade it's fine.  Today is a great day to just slow down, relax and get ready for the go go go schedule with the tour tomorrow.

It's "tropical here, closer to the equator than Sydney.  Lots of plants and flowers and small parks.  If anyone knows what these white flowers are, please tell me.

These flowers fell out of the tree above Wayne. They were all over the ground.

This picture is for Denise Bell.

Anyone know what this shrub is?  Little pink flowers if you zoom in.

It's as easy as can be to find a good lay down

Dinner tonight was with the entire tour group.  We had a very nice dinner.  Fush, here on the northeast coast of Australia is predominant and the local reef fish was fresh, and a nice white fish.
