Day 30 - Friday, July 12, 2024 - Ulapool Scotland

Welcome to Ulapool Scotland

Today was a cool, misty day.  We landed and tendered in to Ulapool at 12:30 pm.  It took from 5 pm last evening until noon to reach the Highlands of Scotland from Belfast.  It's a tiny little town but quite quaint.  Our guided walking tour was only about 45 minutes and we covered the entire town.

Ullapool has a population of approximately 1,500 and we are further north than parts of Russia and the northern portion of Canada.

Our little walk around town.

They are sooooo polite!  No "Yield" over here.  It's Give Way!

I think the words underneath are Scottish for museum

Haggis, the Scottish national dish.  It's as close as in going to get to trying it.

Haggis is a tradtional Scottish dish containing sheep's offal (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours.

Originally a modest dish ensuring no part of the sheep goes to waste, haggis can now be found on the menu in most pubs and many restaurants where one can encounter it in anything from Filo pastry, to Drambuie sauce, to the haggis, neeps and tatties.
(Scots: swede, yellow turnip or rutabaga and potatoes, boiled and mashed separately) and a "dram" (i.e. a glass of Scotch whisky). Mashed together, "neeps and tatties" is also known as "clapshot".

You better have whisky if you're going to swallow this muck!

Our tender that transports us from ship to shore if we have to anchor out and not able to dock at a pier.  Also serves as a life boat and holds 50+ people.

Tomorrow, Orkney Islands.  I may just go into town on the he shuttle. I was here June 18 and saw The Ring of Brodgar.   I think a day wandering around town is sufficient.

ADDED NOTE:
So tonight, after dinner, Wayne and I were talking about our cars which made me text my neighbor, Tim and asked him to start my car.  It's been a month since it moved.  He has the key fob and keys to my house.

Well, the fob wouldn't work and he couldn't get into the car.  And the key part of the fob wouldn't open the door.  I deactivated the alarm on my house...thsts a story from last year when he went into the house and accidentally tripped the security alarm.  So now I deactivate it from my cell phone before I let him in.

He retrieved my other fob from the house.  Well, that didn't work either.   Do it obviously want the fob battery.

Thinking through this mess,  I called Horne Hyundai, in Apache Junction where I bought the car and they gave me the phone number for Hyundai Roadside Assistance through BlueLink (Hyundai trademark).

I called them and they sent a mechanic out to unlock the car. The mechanic was there within 10 minutes which thankfully made Tim not have to wait too long. He jump-started the car after getting the car unlocked with some kind of special tool.

I'm going to have to deal with that when I get home, meaning, why the key portion of the fob could not unlock the door.

Tim told me he was going to take the car for a ride and charge up the battery. He also said he would be driving it every other day or so to make sure it was running. Problem solved from over 10,000 mi away.
