Day 15 - Monday, May 12, 2025 - Passau, Germany
A view from our ship as we sailed into Passau, Germany.
We had a lovely day in Passu with a walking tour of the old city. It's a typical old town with cobblestone streets that are very narrow.
Our guide wandered the streets explaining the ages of various buildings. Passau is where three rivers meet. The Danube, the Inn River and the Ilz River all meet to cause a great amount of flooding over the years.
All of these pictures show high water marks on the buildings in town.
The most recent high water year was 2013.
These are views from the ship where we were docked.
Our walk around town
This is a brewery. Bavaria loves their beer!
Resting as usual.
Veste Oberhaus fortress built in 1219. I did not climb the 314 steps up to the fortress. I'm going to sound like Wayne. You've seen one fortress, you've seen them all. Well, many, at least
More of the buildings as we walked around town
There's a beer tap on the right side of the pillar. A keg is pumped to there so you can pull your own beer in the beer garden
We climbed this hill cobbled street to get to St. Stephen's Cathedral
Wayne hanging on to the walls as he climbed
Most of the old town is styled in the Baroque style. I'm fascinated by the ornate buildings and the craftsmanship.
St. Stephen's Cathedral under some scaffolding
The inside of the cathedral. Another amazing cathedral
The altar piece
Just a few pics after our tour ended.
Germany loves their pretzels
In the afternoon, I had another tour, it was A Bavarian cruise and a walk through the medieval town of Schärding Austria. We took a bus ride to a small boat and on the upper deck we were served 6 different beers and the big Bavarian pretzels. It was an electric boat so there was no noise while we puttered down the Inn River.
When we docked, we walked across a bridge back into Austria, got back on our bus for the drive into Schärding.
We had a short walk around town and enjoyed the medieval town buildings, all in pastel colors.
May pole in the town square
We received information from the capitan of the ship this evening that the water level is too low to continue to our next port Regensburg. We will be spending the night again in the ship in Passau and will be bused to Regansburg in the morning instead of waking up in Regansburg. Tomorrow evening upon our return by bus to Passau, we will learn what happens on Wednesday. We have to pack tomorrow night and switch ships To one further west on the river. I believe this will be Nuremberg.
Right now we're assured that we won't miss any ports. Time will tell. Hopefully when we get to our new ship, water levels will be high enough that we can continue on by ship to Amsterdam.
I'd read.other people's account of this happening to them on FB. We're at the mercy of the height of the rivers and whether the ship can sail. I certainly can't change it. It's entirely out of my control. So you roll with the punches.
More tomorrow when we learn more.
Thanks for sharing your travels they are so interesting
