Day 20 - Saturday, May 17, 2025 - Wertheim, Germany

Welcome to Wertheim, Germany.

Today was a nice easy day. Our 1 hour tour of the town of wurthheim didn't leave until 9:40 a.m. and we took a cute little train ride, driven by a tractor on a 5-minute ride into town.

My sense of humor kicked in.  First Mexican restaurant in Germany I've seen. And no, I didn't try.

The Pointed Tower, round at the bottom and octagonal on top.

No clue what the blue thing is there for.

The tower leans a bit and work was done to keep it from tilting more.  Only time and floods will tell.

The round substructure of the tower was built around 1180, the superstructure around 1450. The core city of Wertheim, was built between 1200 and 1400.

In addition, the tower also served as a prison for "drunken" and "quarrelsome women.

Our tour guide was good and we set off into town, but Wayne and I skipped out about halfway through the tour and found a bakery. Today was a day of rest!

We were told it was the oldest bakery, Bäckerei Frischmuth, and continuous operation since 1551 through 13 generations.  We sat and watched the world go by.  Most of the tours passed us and we were the happy campers watching them and they legged it around this two street town.

I asked which pastry there was the best, she said the Crumble Cake!  I left half!  Just sayin' someone I was with, ate the rest.

Two little kids in the bakery enjoying.

The town is situated between two rivers, the Main and the Tauber.  It's known for it's flooding which happens often.

Many of the houses date back to the 1500's and they've all survived the high waters
The buildings look like the medieval town of Rothenburg with most being timber framed in the Franconian style.

See the high water marks on the left side of the door.

This is why I travel. I love these small villages and the chance to just be there.

Smallest, narrowest house. Smaller at the bottom to pay less taxes on.

The fountain, the Engelsbrunnen. It was created in 1574 and is decorated with two angels bearing the Wertheim coat of arms and giving the fountain its name.

A study in German drinking.  It's not even 10:30 am.  But I guess it's 5 pm somewhere.
Fortress at the top of the hill.  287 steps up I didn't climb.

The Evangelical church in town.  The Stiftskirche.  The foundation of the church was built in 1383.

I took a bunch of pictures, wandered the town and eventually took the noon choo choo tractor train back to the ship. Feet are up and I plan to lose at cribbage this afternoon.
