Day 12 - Wednesday November 5, 2025 - Taormina
This is the view from the 2nd largest Roman theatre in Sicily. Mount Etna is in the far background
Our last full day in Sicily and we spent it in the tourist town of Taormina. We met at 9:30 am this morning and on a walking tour.
Our first stop at at the remains of an open air theatre from 21 BC.
From there we went to St Catherine’s church. A baroque Catholic Church from the 17th century.
Sights on our way to the biggest of the Roman amphitheater.
The 3rd century BC Greek amphitheater partially destroyed over the years and rebuilt in 2nd century AD by the Romans.
Only one chair in the entire theatre!
Our group photo with Mount Etna in the background.
We walked from the theatre through the pedestrian tourist area to the other end of town. These pictures are just sights as we walked through town. A good bit of the town was destroyed by bombing in WW2. When rebuilt, it was built back as much as possible to what had been destroyed.
Some of the old facades still remain.
One of the smallest streets. Portals are needed to allow for rainwater to pass during storms.
The largest square, Piazza IX April, at the opposite end of the pedestrian walkway. Entertainers and beautiful views of the Mediterranean.
Duomo di Taormina from the 13th century, with its stone facade and battlements making it look like a fortress.
He’s sitting as much as me.
Our tour ended and we were on our own. We stopped for lunch and to people watch before walking back uphill to our hotel.
That was a panini. I left most of it but the ham and cheese and tomato was delicious. The bread here is fantastic.

We have our last group dinner tonight at 6:30 pm. And we have a 3:00 am transfer to the airport. It will be a long day. Catania to Rome and then Rome to Cairo. Off for another 2+ weeks exploring the Pyramids.
