The entrance to the D-Day memorial museum

Our day started with an early breakfast and the bus left at 7:45 am for the 2 hour ride to Caen France and the D-Day museum.

There was a 20 minute film as well as some very well done exhibits.  The museum concentrated on the years leading up to the war and then the actual battle on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

We were able to go down inside this bunker on which the museum is situated.   There are exhibits in the bunker now but you can imagine it as the real thing.

We had lunch in the museum, included in the tour, and then we were off to the Cemetery.  This was a very moving experience.  Viking had a ceremony performed by the cemetery officials and laid a wreath, the US national anthem was played and taps were blown.

Our last stop of the day was at Omaha Beach.   We were able to walk in the beach and look over the English Channel.

We’re headed back to the ship, a two hour drive and will get there just before 7 pm and dinner.  It’s been a long day, not too demanding, as most was on the bus, but it was well worth all the time to see a piece of history.

Dinner tonight was amazing.  The wild mushroom soup was fantastic but the beef bourguignon was even better. Julia Child doesn’t make it that good.  Never had it tasted this good.  Topped off with an apple tart tatin and vanilla ice cream.  I want to explode right now.
